2nd Very Hungry Caterpillar Cake

Do you ever think to yourself that something half the size of the original should only take half the time to make? If only that line of thinking were ever true. The decorations on this cake took nearly twice as long to make as the originals, mostly because I failed to factor in all the time it takes to knead the candy clay before forming it, whereas the originals had a crisped rice cereal treat base. The coloring and covering of fondant took about the same time.

Unlike the original, this butterfly is not made from melted Jolly Ranchers or hanging from a wire on the top, but simply attached to the side of the top cake. The customer had a cute topper with the caterpillar coming out of the book, so I left the top open for that.

A lot of the bigger pieces needed more space than was allowed, as the cake was an 8" base, with a 6" middle and 4" topper. That one inch perimeter just wasn't enough to hold these larger pieces to my particular liking, but they all magically stayed in place, even during transport!

Fruit Position

When positioning the fruit, I tried to keep it as close to the book's placement as possible.

Picture of Finished Cake

This picture was posted by the customer on her Facebook page and linked back to me... hopefully she won't mind me using it on here! As you can see, she has the topper on it, which works out so beautifully with the rest of the cake. I also added the little colorful dots with the words "Happy Birthday Danya" one them, spelled with one letter per dot.
