Princess Castle Cake
This cake was for a 5 year old who desperately wanted a castle cake for her birthday. Her grandmother had ordered it, but it was hit and miss with deadlines for the final details and I ended up having to make executive decisions with things like cake flavor and color schemes. Fortunately I made all the right decisions!
Frontal View
The towers were made from crisped rice treats wrapped around dowels, so they could be pulled apart from the main cake and eaten. The whole cake was wrapped in fondant then dry brushed with edible glitter to make the whole cake sparkle!
Frontal Close Up
I added the banner and the birds above the front door at the last minute because the cake didn't quite look finished.
Turret Peaks Close Up
Ahhh... the amazing uses of sugar cones!
Side View
Originally I had the blue/purple rocks as the stepping stones to the front doors of the castle, but with a purple door and purple stones, it looked odd. So I pried them all up and made them yellow stones toward the front entrance, and utilized an empty corner for the castle's "cornerstone!"
Original Sketch
My original sketch didn't have a whole lot of details, and we hadn't discussed colors so I just used a light blue for the castle never intending on making it that color. However, with an impending deadline and being unable to get ahold of the client, I decided to just use white fondant to cover the entire castle first, figuring that if need be, I could always paint or dry brush whatever the chosen color would be. Then, when I had to color the cake, I just thought, hey, this is for a 5 year old girl and you can't go wrong with pink (and this girl is ALL girl!) So I made some pink "bricks" out of various shades of marbled fondant then dry brushed the entire cake with pink pearl dust to make it sparkle. I had also planned on painting the princesses in the towers, but found these characters at Cake Decor & More in Hazel Dell at 104th Street & HWY 99 (hope you don't mind the plug Sam!) and figured the little girl would like keepsake toys more.
