Sports Cake
This sports themed cake was done for a 1 year old's birthday. As is tradition with any 1st birthday, the child should have their own cake to eat and/or destroy. This cake was no exception. I made an individual cake for the birthday boy and created a "1" candle out of candy clay and a regular birthday candle, then plopped it on top of the cake. It wasn't until after I had taken all the pictures and put my camera away that I realized that I needed to turn the small cake around to read correctly from the front. I fixed the mistake before the party started, but didn't think to retake the pictures! Silly me!
Front of Cake with Individual Cake
Here you can see both cakes from the front. The hat is also a cake, covered in candy clay to look like the rest of the decorations.
Back of Cake
I knew this cake was going to be on a dining room table and be viewed from all angles, so I made certain to decorate every part of the cakes. Deciding the back of the hat looked a little plain, and since the boy's name wasn't anywhere on the cake, I put it on the backside of the hat. Originally I was going to put the name on the side of the cake, but felt it would look to busy with everything else. The back of the hat seemed like the next logical choice.
Original Sketch
Here is the orginal sketch I made when proposing what I would do with the cake. I mostly wanted to show the different sports equipment to use, and they would be positioned wherever they looked best on the cake. All the components are in the sketch, but their placement has been adjusted to better suit the actual cake.
